Abstract

Background. The topic of the article appears to be relevant due to the necessity of the import-substituting modernization of the Russian economy, as the dependence on the imported products threatens with a decrease of the economic safety and su-pression of the country’s economic growth. The aim of the work to analyze the ex-perience and review of measures of the import-substituting industrialization and modernization of Asian and Latin American countries in order to determine direc-tions, terms and prospects of import substitution in Russia.
Materials and methods. Realization of the research tasks was achieved using the comparative analysis of the import-substituting industrialization and modernization of Asian and Latin American countries in order to determine the nature, goals, mechanisms, strategies, directions and results of import substitution in Russia. The methodological potential included the comparative, statistical, system analyses.
Results. The authors reviewed the import-substituting industrialization measures in Asia and Latin America; revealed the nature, goals, mechanisms, strategies and re-sults of import substitution, positive and negative aspects due to ambiguity and con-tradictoriness of results thereof; the risk of country’s economic isolation aggravation and “naturalization” of its economy.
Conclusions. The research carried out discloses the process of import-substituting modernization as a complex problem, promoting a country’s economic competitiveness growth, improvement of competitive environment, regulating of competitive relations and implementation of structural rearrangement.
